Provenance
The service was ordered by Emperor Nicholas I in 1834 as a gift for Mahmud II, the Sultan of Turkey (1808-1839), to mark the signing of the Treaty of Unkiar Skelessi in 1833, which secured Russian acess to the Dardanelles.
