Richard Avedon’s elephant models Sweden’s most expensive photo - sold for SEK 3.062 Million

Bukowskis | Richard Avedon - Dovima with Elephants

Dovima with elephants is the most famous fashion photo in the world and today at 2 pm it was sold for SEK 3.062 Million, consequently the most expensive photo ever sold in Sweden.

In August 1955, when Richard Avedon took out his favourite model from the studio and places her between two elephants he wrote photo history. The image with the famous and most well paid fasion model was considered daring since the shooting had taken place outdoord and that two enormous animals took the attention from what really was in focus: The dress by the young Yves Saint Laurent.

- The photo has got everything you could wish for when it comes to the legendary Richard Avedon. The moment, the composition, the big size and the story behind. I am not particularily surprised since the photo is famous, but of course really happy to have gotten the opportunity to sell such a legendary photo here in Sweden, says Lena Nytén, specialist contemporary art and photography at Bukowskis.

Last autumn, a photo by Helmut Newton, Domestic Nude, was sold at Bukowskis for SEK 2,5 Million, then a Swedish record, today beaten by Richard Avedon.

Silver print, signed, 13/50, 130 x 106 cm, Est 2,5 - 3 million SEK.
