Largest Modern Sales ever at Bukowskis
With total prices well over estimates and total sales of nearly SEK 84 million, the message is that major international collectors are keeping their eye on the Swedish auction market. The Spring Modern Sale fetched the largest total ever in Bukowskis’ history, with a record 16 bids in the SEK one million class.
Auction market running hot
The ten highest winning bids totalled SEK 34,391,440. Léger’s watercolor (SEK 5,193,690), a Josef Albers (SEK 6,550,000) and a Marc Chagall (SEK 5,367,000) were among the top international lots, while Baertling’s monumental Mithra (SEK 3,440,000), Gösta Adrian-Nilsson’s Flotte/Flotta (SEK 2,885,000) and Leander Engström’s Varietédansöser (SEK 2,327,000) were the three highest prices for Swedish pieces.
“It’s incredibly exciting to be in such a strong auction market. My analysis is that art is considered a safe investment – regardless of how the market may seem otherwise. Besides, collecting art is something you do with passion and knowledge”, says CEO Michael Storåkers.
Total sales, with commission, came to SEK 83,916,000 (hammer price: SEK 67,715,000, 4% under opening bids)
