Scramble for high-class luxury furniture
Expectations ran high on the afternoon of the second day of the Classic Sale when vintage furniture came under the hammer. Desire for royal quality was tangible when top lots came up for bidding and went for high prices.
“It was just as with Zorn and Strindberg – masterpieces are always in a class by themselves. And the customers know that,” says Henrik Åberg, head of the department for furniture.
Georg Haupt is associated with King Gustav III and the emergence of Neo-Classicism in Swedish furniture design. Along with Gottlieb Iwersson, Haupt was the royal cabinet maker, while Fredrich Iwersson made pieces for Lovisa Ulrika, mother of Gustav III.
“They had a fabulous eye for form and an incredible knack for inlaid woodwork, flowers, figure medallions, entire landscapes with motifs from antiquity. They are instantly recognisable. Those that we sold today are among the very best in Swedish cultural legacy. It’s great to see that they are appreciated,” Åberg says.
The entire department of vintage furniture was sold for high prices, see hammer prices for today.
