Gothic statuette sells for over a million
It is small, but exquisitely detailed and expressive of the intimacy between mother and child. The small ivory statuette from the late 13th century simply exudes Gothic mystique. That it is just like those that can be seen in French museums is something collectors obviously appreciated.
Virgin and Child, statuette (h. 18 cm). Final price SEK 1,029,000 (estimate SEK 250,000–350,000).
The statuette shows the Virgin Mary sitting on a bench with the one-year-old Infant Jesus who looks tenderly up at his mother and seems to tickle her under the chin as she holds his foot. That international objects of such age and calibre come on the market is highly unusual.
“The workmanship is superb, just look at the way the folds of cloak fall and cling to her body. This anonymous medieval artisan has handled the material with stupendous skill,” says Henrik Åberg, head of the department of works of art.
