Four 'DSS' easy chairs by Charles & Ray Eames, Vitra, 2017.

The classic chair DSS (Dining Height Side Chair Steel Base) was designed by Charles and Ray Eames in 1950. Two years earlier, the designer duo had participated in the ”International Competition for Low-Cost Furniture Design” organized by the New York Museum of Modern Art. Charles and Ray presented a chair with an organic metal seat shell that won second prize. However, the material proved to be too expensive to achieve successful mass production and the couple’s search for alternative materials led them to polypropene, which was previously unknown in the furniture industry. Since then, Eames’ plastic chairs have been produced with a variety of different bases to serve diverse purposes. At the DSS model, the anatomically designed seat is mounted on a base consisting of a steel base.

The chair DSS comes with a frame in polypropene and legs in metal.
