Eskilstuna fristad var ett område där hantverkare fick etablera sig och var sedan 1771 skattebefriat för att stimulera industrin. Särskilt inflyttande metallarbetare blev framgångsrika vilket gjorde staden till en av landets ledande metallindustriorter. Dessa behövde inte gå med i något skrå eller ha ett mästarbrev för att arbeta.
