"Brun handske" föregår Erik Olsons verk "Handsken är kastad", som är Halmstad-gruppens första surrealistiska målning. Auktionens målning är fortfarande hållen i en strängare komposition. Året innan, 1929, målar Olson "Svart handske - röd fond" som formmässigt påminner mycket om "Brun handske". Han skriver själv om detta verk i ett brev till brodern Axel 31 januari 1930: "Jag har nu åter måst kontrollera mig själv en smula och har behov av strängare konstruktion ovanpå friheterna. Den tavla jag nu arbetar med ser ut att bli en god vägledning mot större koncentration och kraft i de plastiska formerna på samma gång som jag söker att nyansera."
