Skulpturen modellerades omkring 1888-1900 då Frisendahl endast var 12-14 år gammal. Ytterst få verk av Frisendahl finns bevarade från hans ungdomstid. G. Jungmarker, Carl Frisendahl 1886/1948, 1964, s. 30 nämner att det endast finns tre till fyra kända skulpturer, ofta i fragmentariskt skick:

”Carl fick arbeta i ”bondlera”, som införskrevs från Uppsala, och i sitt obrända skick blev den skör. ”Betraktelser” kallade han helfigursbilden av en kisande gumma av lapptyp som sitter med korslagda ben, glasögon på näsan och bibeln i knät (av den skulpturen lär bara huvudet finnas kvar).
