SELECTED WINES AND SPIRITS – SEPTEMBER

The season’s first and the year’s fifth fine wine and spirits auction attracted a great deal of attention, with almost 680 lots up for auction across three days. Of these, 93 % were sold for a total value of MSEK 3.

The auction got off to a busy start, with all 110 lots of predominantly vintage champagne selling quickly. One of the lots that generated the most intense bidding was champagne recovered from the wreck of the ketch Jönköping, which finally sold for SEK 324,000. The champagne, a Heidsieck 1907 Monopole Goût Américain, was salvaged in 1998 from the wreck of the Jönköping, which had been sunk by a U-boat while carrying a cargo destined for the Tsar of Russia. A magnum of an older bottling of non-vintage Krug Private Cuvée sold for a surprising SEK 5,300, while a bottle of 1988 Moët Brut sold for SEK 6,000.

There were fewer red wines from Bordeaux at this auction. However, interest reached a peak with only four lots of a total of 103 left to go. A well-preserved magnum of Mouton Rothschild 1955 had fetched SEK 27,600 by the time the bidding ended. Originally preserved for many years with bast packaging material in its original case. Three bottles of 1975 La Mission Haut Brion from the estate’s renowned 1975 vintage reached SEK 17,500. From Burgundy, a 1992 La Tâche finally sold for SEK 21,600 after some energetic bidding.

A case of 6 magnums of the 2013 vintage of Ornellaia from Italy sold for SEK 19,800. A Gaja Dagromis from the 2010 vintage realised just over SEK 6,600. Spain’s Aalto PS from Ribera del Duero also attracted some attention and had reached just over SEK 10,400 by the time the bidding was over.

Notable items among the distilled drinks included the 24-year-old Brora Highland whisky, distilled in 1981, which fetched SEK 7,900. This is a malt whisky from a distillery which suffered the same fate as so many others, closing in 1983. Limited availability is a decisive factor in the final price. The same is true for the Lowland whisky St Magdalene from 1975, which sold for SEK 6,200. The St Magdalene distillery also closed permanently the same year (1983). The Islay whisky Ardbeg in the form of Supernova SN 2010 recorded the highest final price, reaching almost SEK 7,900.
