Bukowskis’ Modern Masters Helsinki was closed successfully yesterday with a high Sell-Through rate and many above-estimate results. The results clearly demonstrate that there is an increasing demand for Finnish modern art and design. Through the auction, Bukowskis’ once again strengthens its position as the leading Nordic auction house.
We are extremely delighted with the auction’s results and the positive response that we have received from both collectors and new bidders. It is fantastic to see how the demand for Finnish modern art and design just keeps on growing, says Laura Pohjola, Bukowskis’ modern art specialist.
The top lot of the auction was Reidar Särestöniemi’s impressive and personal artwork. The painting was made for a relative of Särestöniemi's in Norway in the 1970s. The work returned to Finland in the 1990s and has been with the same owner since then. Särestöniemi is known for his colourful and abstract paintings and this particular artwork is a great example of his appreciated style.
It was wonderful to see that Särestöniemi's unique painting reached such an amazing final price. Our task is to match amazing artworks with the right buyers, and I am happy that we once again succeeded in this. The quality of the artwork is still the most important thing and at the moment there is an exceptionally high amount of amazing works on the market, says Johanna Lindfors, Bukowskis’ art specialist.
The auction also presented a curated selection of design items of the highest quality and highlights included works by Paavo Tynell, Alvar Aalto, Oiva Toikka and Tapio Wirkkala. Alvar Aalto’s Paimio armchair, which is admired both for its comfort and sculptural design, was sold for an amazing final price of 27 153 €. Bidders battled for Paavo Tynell’s iconic lamps and many reached above-estimate results – Tynell’s table lamp reached a final price of 15 317 € and his unique pendant light was sold for 13 479 €.
There is a high demand for unique design items with interesting provenances. Paavo Tynell’s table lamp is truly unique and it is an important example of his elegant and modern design, says Anna Rosenius, Bukowskis’ design specialist.
The demand for jewellery was high and the category had an amazing Sell-Through rate of 98 %. The category’s highlights were Tapio Wirkkala’s one of a kind brooch and Björn Weckström’s sculpture-like jewelry.
Finnish jewellery artist and designers from the 60s and 70s are more popular than ever before and their items are wanted by both national and international buyers, says Nina Westerlund, Bukowskis’ jewellery specialist.
