As the leading auction house on the nordic market, Bukowskis continues to present new successful results for modern art. The main sensation during Modern Art + Design was most definitely the masterpiece "Seglatsen (Seglatsen 1)" by GAN; a monumental painting, which after a thrilling bidding achieved the record high final price of 8 922 880 SEK.
- We are proud of the great trust we received from our customers and the results shows a continuity of successful sales at Bukowskis, which strengthens our leading position in the market for Fine Art, says Louise Arén, CEO Bukowskis.
- GAN’s ”Seglatsen” is a masterpiece that has everything you could wish for. In addition to being wonderfully painted, it is unique in both its shape and its large format. In every aspect, an extraordinary piece", says Andreas Rydén, Head specialist Art, Bukowskis.
During the evening's Modern Art + Design auction, artworks from several international masters went under the hammer. Jean-Paul Riopelle's very characteristic painting "Giboyeuse", painted with palette knife in thick distinctive colorfields creating a sculptural surface, became the first lot to exceed 1 million SEK. Riopelle is one of several represented artists at the sale who will forever be a hallmark for the avant-garde, who by changing the expression of art, also changed the way we look at art, around the previous turn of century.
The French sculptor Henri Lauren’s magnificent ”Femme à l’Oiseau” achieved the exceptional final price of 3 017 050 SEK and the equally sensational sculpture ”Maquette for reclining figure” by Henry Moore reached a final price of 1 004 500 SEK. André Lanskoy, one of the most prominent abstract painters during the post-war period, was represented with two major art works which were sold for 369 750 SEK and 612 000 SEK.
- The interest for the international department was exceptional with bidders from all over the world. This shows that Sweden is a force to be reckoned with even on the international market and the fantastic world-class works resulted in high final prices, says Lena Rydén, specialist modern art, Bukowskis.
The auction also presented several Swedish masters such as Sigrid Hjertén, Isaac Grünewald and Einar Jolin, artists with a high demand on the market that continuously achieve high prices. Isaac Grünewald’s exquisite self portrait from 1912, with its patterned wide frame that integrates in the portrait, was sold for a final price of 416 500 SEK. Ground-breaking and still as relevant today as then!
