Specialist's choice Karin Aringer

We have spoken to Karin Aringer, Specialist in Photography and Contemporary Art, about this spring's upcoming auction Contemporary Art & Design.. She took the opportunity to highlight some of her personal favourites at this spring's auction.
What can we look forward to in this spring's Contemporary Art & Design sale?
- The photo department includes both Swedish contemporary conceptual photography and classic documentary photography. The photo department also includes iconic portraits of musicians and actors, and monumental colour images by Swedish and international photographers. These photographers are not often represented at auctions in Sweden.
Feel free to look through our web catalogue and do not hesitate to stop by for a viewing. You can also email or call me, and we will find a time that suits you. Welcome!

David Hockney "David Graves looking at Bayswater", 1982”

With his collages, David Hockney wants to examine the truthfulness of photography; can a photograph reproduce the actual image of a human being? Nowadays, most people would answer no to that question, but what if you instead take lots of pictures simultaneously of the same motif. Could the true picture emerge?
In 2017, I was in London and visited Tate Britain's extensive Hockney exhibition. I remember how I stayed extra long in the exhibition hall dedicated to the artist's photographic collages, fascinated by how clever and skilfully he had composed and assembled them.

Lars Tunbjörk,"Midsommar i Rättvik"

Lars Tunbjörk had his big break-through in 1993, in Sweden and internationally, with the book "Landet utom sig". The images are melancholic, surreal and sometimes a little absurd. Tunbjörk's pictures of small-town life are fantastic – if you grew up in a small town in the 1980s and 1990s, you might recognize these motifs.

Robert Mapplethorpe, ”Thomas, 1986”

######
Robert Mapplethorpe is considered one of the world's most technically skilled photographers. He is famous for his darkroom skills, his ability to arrange and light his images, and for his sexually experimental and provocative photos. Mapplethorpe was very interested in art history, and his photographs often have connections to well-known paintings or other historical motifs within photography and sculpture. His photographic production includes such opposing motifs as flower arrangements, classic nudes, self-portraits and BDSM images. This is one of his recurring models, Thomas Williams, in a beautiful picture from 1986.

Sune Jonsson, "Kammarinteriör hos änkefru Jenny Edström, Hökmark, Lövånger socken", 1960

######
In his pictures, Sune Jonsson documented a type of society and a lifestyle that no longer exists in Sweden. His photographs from the rural villages in Västerbotten are an important documentation that shows how tiring a farmers life could be and how important the religion was to people's everyday lives. They are fine-tuned and respectful images of fellow humans and their homes. Jonsson's picture from the house of the widow Jenny Edström in Lövånger is signed, which is unusual for prints by Jonsson.
