Pietro Santi Bartoli (1635-1700) & Giovan Pietro Bellori (text):
28 etchings (6 of which double-page) from Gli Archi Trionfali di Roma, published by Giovanni Giacomo de’ Rossi at Rome 1689-90.
Title / dedication leaf to Cardinal Pietro Ottoboni (engraved by Van Audenaert) + 27 etchings numbered 24-47, 49-51 (with a pencilled note that no. 48 was omitted in the numbering). In other words approximately the second half of the work, with the title. (The Istituto centrale per la grafica preserves plates for the title + 49 etchings, with numbering polished off.)
Later album with leather spine. Minor signs of use, occasional staining and finger-soiling, as well as a few repairs. Some etchings smaller than the album (49 x 35 cm) and laid down on support sheets.
With motifs from marble reliefs and decorations from the triumphal arches of Rome (Constantine, Septimius Severus, Titus) as they were at the end of the 17th century. The images provide, among other things, iconographic information about parts which have not been preserved since then and, like several of Bartolis & Belloris' works, were of great importance to the artists of neoclassicism.
