A Masterpiece by Sigrid Hjertén, "Iván i fåtöljen" for sale at Modern Art + Design on November 21st

Sigrid Hjertén "Iván i fåtöljen" (detail). For sale at Modern Art & Design on November 21th.

Sweden's foremost colourist, once questioned, now the most sought-after modernist on the art market!

Bukowskis has been given the honour to sell one of Sigrid Hjertén's finest works, "Iván i fåtöljen" from 1915, a masterpiece that has never been out for sale. The painting represents one of Hjertén's most iconic motifs, a work recently seen in the critically acclaimed exhibition "Sigrid Hjertén - a masterpiece of colour" at Prince Eugens Waldemarsudde. The exhibition was a huge success and Sigrid Hjertén is now regarded one of the Swedish modernist avant-garde’s front figures, more relevant than ever.

– Sigrid Hjertén introduced a whole new way of painting when she came back from Paris, it was colourful and expressionist, pioneering for her time. She was a dedicated and intellectual artist who remained true to her artistic expression despite the challenges she had as a woman, mother and wife to the greatest star of all, Isaac Grünewald, says Andreas Rydén, Head Specialist Art, Bukowskis.

The artwork "Iván i fåtöljen" is painted in the artist's Grünewald-Hjertén apartment on Katarinavägen depicting the couple's 4-year-old son, Iván, sitting in a red armchair, in the background a familiar and magnificent view of Stockholm and Gamla Stan. This particular year, Sigrid also paints "Blå Balkongen", "Testunden" and "Kvinna i röd interiör", all significant works in the artist's production.

– Hjertén is today the third highest paid modernist in Sweden and we are extremely proud to announce this work for sale during the Modern Art Auction. It will be one of the autumn's biggest auction events, says Björn Extergren, Head of Sales and Sales, Bukowskis.

Viewing 15–20 November at Berzelii Park 1 in Stockholm.
