The specialist's choice – Amanda Wahrgren lists favourites among the art

We have spoken to Amanda Wahgren, Specialist Modern Art and Prints. Read about her point of view on the content in this season's Modern Art + Design before the auction 24-25 November. Also, explore some of Amanda's personal favourites.
Den här gången har vi en ovanligt spännande internationell konstavdelning med närmare 50 internationella målningar och skulpturer. Exempelvis har vi 6 fina verk i olika tekniker av Lucio Fontana, en intensiv och stor målning av Serge Poliakoff, en olja av Max Ernst samt inte mindre än 3 verk av Hans Hartung vilket inte hör till vanligheterna. På den svenska avdelningen har vi en stor bredd och till toppnumren hör en fin olja med Opera-motiv av Sigrid Hjertén från 1910-talet, en ikonisk målning av Ragnar Sandberg med motiv från Lilla bommen och en fantastiskt fin Olle Baertling.
If you want to collect art, what advice would give?
To begin with, I think it's good to be exposed to a lot of art, visit Bukowskis exhibitions, ask us about things you are interested in, visit all museums and galleries we have in the country. Sweden has a long and solid tradition of fine art, and there is a lot to experience. My recommendation is always to buy art that you like, whether you think it will increase or decrease in value. You can start investing in works on paper or a print in an edition by established names to later sell and invest in more expensive pieces in oil by the same artist.
What makes modern art interesting to you?
Modern art is fascinating because it tells something about society at the time of production, such as innovations and ways of thinking that were valid at the time. History has always interested me, and therefore, I think it is exciting to get to know how a work was created and under what premises the artist created
420. Gösta Nystroem, "Riders in the park"
This work speaks to me in several ways; the colours, shapes and the motif itself. The painting expresses elegance. It has a modern and at the same time timeless language in a wonderful colour scheme. As an old horse girl, I can not help but love this painting with its elegant carriages. Gösta Nystroem is an interesting artist that perhaps not everyone knows. He was a versatile artist, best known as a pioneering musician. He abandoned his artistic career for music early. The paintings he left behind are few and exclusive.

471. Serge Poliakoff, "Composition abstraite"
I have always loved abstract art, and this work appeals to me a lot. When we unpacked the painting, we were several people who stood and took in the intensity of the painting. It really stands out both in size and with its strong colours. In my work, I mainly come across graphics by Poliakoff. Therefore it is extra fun that Bukowskis has the opportunity to sell such a fantastic painting as "Composition abstraite" from 1967.

436. Karel Appel, "Two People"
During the 1970s and 80s, Karel Appel worked in parallel with sculpture and painting, which becomes clear in the auction's colourful work "Two people", where he has pushed the boundaries of creation by adding three-dimensional shapes to the traditional painted canvas. The combination is bold and creates a strong and at the same time, a playful composition that does not leave anyone indifferent, regardless of whether you like it or not.

464. Lotte Laserstein, "Woman and violinist"
Lotte Laserstein was born in East Prussia but lived in Sweden for a long time. She completed her education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin and immediately had great success with her skilful portrait painting. During World War II, she found it difficult to work as she was considered a Jew because her grandparents were Jews. Through an exhibition at Galerie Moderne in Stockholm in 1937, an opportunity opened up for her to leave her homeland and she moved to Sweden. This atmospheric and enigmatic motif, probably made between 1933-35, has very high quality. According to the expert Dr Anna-Carola Krausse, the woman on the picture is Lotte's close friend and muse Traute Rose, and the male violinist remains unidentified. There is something tender and emotional about the painting and you become very curious about why the woman is standing behind a door and listening without making herself known.
