World Record for Félix Martinez and Top Sale for Akseli Gallen-Kallela at Important Spring Sale
This week, Swedish and international art went under the hammer at Bukowskis' live auction, Important Spring Sale. The auction featured several lots exceeding 1 million SEK, including well-known Swedish artists such as Anders Zorn, Carl Larsson, Lotte Laserstein, and Carl Milles. International highlights from the auction included a new world record for Félix Martinez and a spectacular final price for a painting by Akseli Gallen-Kallela.
One of the more surprising highlights of the auction was the oil painting Dance in the Village, Philippines, by Filipino artist Félix Martinez, dated 1886. The painting attracted a lively bidding and sold for several times its pre sale estimate, achieving a final price of 4,625,000 SEK – a new world record for a work by Martinez.
Another top lot was the painting ”Isbildning” (Jäätyvä järvi) from 1896 by Finnish artist Akseli Gallen-Kallela, which had a lower estimate of 1 million SEK. After an exciting bidding war, the painting sold for a final price of 8,625,000 SEK – the second-highest price ever achived for a work by the artist.
