Den argentinske konstnären Julio Le Parc experimenterar med geometrisk abstraktion, ljus och perception och är en av pionjärerna inom både op-konst och kinetisk konst. Efter studier vid School of Fine Arts i Buenos Aires intresserade han sig för Arte Concreto-Invenci-13n-gruppen och Lucio Fontanas Spazialismo-rörelse. År 1958 flyttade Le Parc till Paris med konstnärskollegan Francisco Sobrino med ett stipendium från den franska regeringen.
1959 började Le Parc arbeta med sina geometriska abstrakta målningar baserade på förutbestämda system, först i svartvitt, sedan i färg. Le Parc arbetar med måleri, skulptur, installationer och mycket mer - han manipulerar kromatiska färgpaletter, utforskar negativt utrymme och subtila samspel mellan ljus och skugga. Många av verken ser ut att vibrera, vissa består bokstavligen av rörliga delar. Le Parc har anammat utopiska ideal i hela sitt konstnärskap. Tillsammans med konstnärer som Hugo Demarco och François Morellet grundade han Groupe de Recherche d'Art Visuel (1960-68), som främjade konst som ett medel för kollektivt skapande och uppmuntrade allmänhetens deltagande.
Le Parc beskriver tanken bakom “The surface colour series” där den aktuella målningen ingår:
"I wanted them [colours] to be pure, not spoiled by black and white. I forbid myself to use any colours I didn't choose from the start. The limited 14 colours seemed to resume all the possible variations of the chromatic mixtures. From this scale of 14 colours, I started to make simple mixtures from one or two shades going horizontally, vertically and in diagonal. Those mixtures born from a simple and strict system were multiple.
Later I invented a small machine with transparent tapes where all my shades of colours could appear. Switching them, I could have an incredible choice of mixture. I was impressed of the quantity of the possible changes included in each program. I was keen imagining all the variations succeeding in time and the probabilities were leading me to a new phenomenon: the limitless duration. Each painting which was made with any combinations was a special moment with ever-changing movement and colours." (Julio Le Parc, 2006)
Le Parc har ställt ut i New York, London, Paris, Buenos Aires, Hong Kong, São Paulo och Rom. Hans verk ingår bland annat i samlingarna på Museum of Modern Art, Tate, Centre Pompidou, Guggenheim Museum, Museo Reina Sofía, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Buenos Aires och Museum Ludwig.
