The Hmong New Year Festival is one of the most colourful spring festivals in Ha Giang, celebrated by the H’Mông ethnic community. Depending on the region, it often falls around the Lunar New Year season.
As Lunar New Year unfolds, Hmong communities gather on mist-covered peaks, keeping ancient games and vibrant traditions alive from the third to the seventh day of the first lunar month. Throughout the festival, women wear their most beautiful outfits.
Do Xuan Doan, born in 1937, is a distinguished Vietnamese artist renowned for his contributions to modern and contemporary art. He graduated from the Hanoi College of Fine Arts in 1961 and developed a unique style that blends traditional Vietnamese themes with modern techniques. His formative years coincided with the Vietnam War, during which he joined the army, an experience that infused his artistic expression with resilience and social consciousness.
Do Xuan Doan's paintings often illustrate scenes of rural life, capturing the harmony between man and nature. His works are characterised by vibrant colours, dynamic compositions, and the use of lacquer on wood, a traditional Vietnamese medium that adds depth and texture. His subjects include ancient houses, old streets, and ordinary people, where simplicity and sincerity are encapsulated. He enhances his paintings with a vibrant colour palette and bold brushstrokes.
Defying the constraints of conventional categorisation, Do Xuan Doan seamlessly traverses the realms of realism, expressionism, surrealism, and abstraction. As one of the founders and leaders of the Young Artists Association in 1966, he played a pivotal role in encouraging innovation and experimentation among young artists, significantly influencing the development of modern Vietnamese art.
Do Xuan Doan's contributions to Vietnamese culture and his role in shaping the Young Artists Association remain significant. His contemporary lacquer works continue to inspire and resonate with viewers, exemplifying creativity, resilience, and a commitment to pushing artistic boundaries. His enduring legacy reminds us of the power of expression and the beauty of capturing everyday life through visual art.
