More information

Erland Cullberg's paintings are almost impossible to resist. They pulsate with life and intense presence. With glowing masses of colors, faces, situations and events emerge. Created with energetic brushstrokes, great sensitivity and amazing color. Erland Cullberg's paintings are rooted in an expressionist tradition, but the paintings follow their very own rules.

Erland Cullberg is usually described as an expressionist and colorist. From an early age, Cullberg suffered from schizophrenia, and he has called his illness "a widespread mental cold." However, his art does not have to be seen as a disease art. Erland Cullberg was well educated and studied in the 1950s at the Academy of Fine Arts for, among others, Bror Hjorth, Hugo Zuhr and Evert Lundquist. Cullberg and Evert Lundquist kept in touch all their lives.

In 2019, a new large art scholarship was founded, in the name of Erland Cullberg. His siblings donated one million kronor so that a prize of 100,000 kronor could be awarded for at least ten years to come. A board with, among others, Olle Granath, Susanna Slöör and Dan Wolgers will appoint the annual recipient of the scholarship.

Erland Cullberg had his big breakthrough in 1986 at the Moderna Museet when he was named "artist of the year”.

Erland Cullberg is represented in museums throughout the Nordic region. Among others at the Moderna Museet and Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, Statens Museum for Kunst in Copenhagen, Åbo Konstmuseum in Finland and Museum für Kunst in Lübeck, Germany.

Galleri Kavaletten in Uppsala has since 1986 played a significant role in Erland Cullberg's life and art. Since 1986, the gallery has managed all activities that had to do with Erland Cullberg's art. Via Galleri Kavaletten, information could be obtained regarding Cullberg's upcoming exhibitions in the country and the purchase of paintings, drawings and graphics could take place. The Uppsala gallery was founded in 1973 and was run by an art-loving doctor, Johan Wallin. 1995 he moved the art business from Uppsala to Stockholm, where exhibitions were arranged until 2006.
