Stephen Mueller föddes år 1947 i Norfolk, Virginia och utbildade sig vid University of Texas samt vid Bennington Collage. Karaktäristiskt för Muellers konst är livliga abstraktioner och symboliska former. Mueller mottog ett flertal stipendier under sin levnad och hans konst finns representerad på bland annat Whitney Museum of American Art i New York, Brooklyn Museum, Denver Art Museum och Museum of Fine Arts i Houston.
