Two Albarello faience apothcahry jars, 16th/17th Century.

One decorated in yellow, blue and white with a central motif of Saint Sebastian pierced by arrows. Height 28 cm. The other decorated in green, blue, yellow and white glaze with a central motif of a man who gathers herbs. Height 26 cm.

Provenance

From the Collection of Fil. Dr Gunnar Göthberg. He was early on interested in the historical development of medicine. He was one of the founder of the 'Farmacihistoriska Sällskapet' in 1972. Gunnar himself translated from Latin to Swedsih the first edition of the Swedish Farmakope, dating from 1775, he was then himself 85 years old. In 1999 he was awarded the titel of honorary doctor of the Hummaniora faculty in Gothenburg and he was also an honorary member of the the Society of Pharmacists and the Society of Pharmaceutical History.

Literature

Saint Sebastian became the patron saint of disease during the middle ages when the black death/plague roamed Europa.
