More information

While Tove Jansson's fellow artists had already switched to completely abstract art in the 1950s, Jansson still participated in the Artists' Association's annual exhibition in the early 1960s with a still life painting. Both the audience and the artist herself were conflicted about the figurative motif surrounded by abstract art - was it a question of stagnation or loyalty to one's own style? Jansson's transition to a more abstract expression took place gradually from the 1950s to the 1960s. This change was reflected in her work in the form of an abstract way of depicting, while visible reality remained the starting point for the works. Jansson's compositions were at their most non-figurative in the late 1960s. Although the abstract period in her career was short, she painted her compositions with great confidence and maturity.
