New world records and six lots sold above one million SEK at Contemporary Art & Design

Strong market for international art and design

This spring’s first Live auction offered sensational final prices and masterpieces by international and Swedish artists such as James Rosenquist, Banksy, Andy Warhol, Irving Penn, William N. Copley, Christo & Jeanne-Claude, Maria Miesenberger and Nathalie Djurberg & Hans Berg.

Bukowskis can now present a new world record for Andy Warhol’s ”Ingrid Bergman – With hat”, the motif achieved a final price of a sensational SEK 931,000. Bukowskis can also present new world records for both Jonathan Lasker and Maria Miesenberger.

– The extensive bidding of works by Christo & Jeanne-Claude, Jonathan Lasker, James Rosenquist, Robert Combas and Leon Tarasewicz shows that the market is strong for international artworks. Sculptures by Swedish artists such as Nathalie Djurberg & Hans Berg, Maria Miesenberger, Lena Cronqvist and Charlotte Gyllenhammar were successfully sold during the evening. Bukowskis achieved a new world record for a sculpture by Miesenberger, which is excellent, says Louise Wrede, Specialist Contemporary Art.

› Maria Miesenberger’s sculpture sold for a final price of SEK 939 000 – a new world record for the artist.

– The renowned photographs by Irving Penn and David Hockney attracted many bidders, timeless motifs by prominent artists, which are some of my favourites. The photography department contained many different motifs and forms of expression and technology. The photography department included provocative motifs as well as decorative and hopeful works. I am delighted to see that so many customers found photographs they liked, says Karin Aringer, Specialist Photography & Contemporary Art.

– It’s thrilling to see that Warhol continues to enchant collectors around the globe! There is an insatiable demand for quality works with good provenance and significant motifs. Today’s auction showed that Bukowskis’ continues to deliver results on an international level. The fine selection of works by Banksy, Hockney, Lichtenstein and Hirst, among others, attracted many bidders and collectors, says Marcus Kinge, Specialist Prints.

› ”Fashion Photograph (Nina Devoe), New York, 1951” by Irving Penn sold for a final price of SEK 379 700.

The contemporary design catalogue this season offered an eclectic mix of international and Swedish design.

– There was a great success for many of my personal favourites. Notably, the international department received much attention and was very successful. We saw a majority of bidders on the Pantonova set by Verner Panton and the unique lamp by Derossi & Ceretti, which both achieved high final prices. Bukowskis is very pleased that Swedish classics from Källemo found new owners, both here in Sweden and internationally, says Jonatan Jahn, Specialist Design.

Several iconic items were sold for market-leading prices such as the chairs El Dorado, Rex and El Rey by Theselius, as well as the iconic Concrete by Bohlin. Bukowskis also presented young contemporary designers, such as Niklas Runesson, Magniberg, Björn Friborg and Fredrik Paulsen, who attracted a new audience.

Scandinavia’s biannual Fine Art auction for contemporary art and design continues to manifest its leading position with increased international interest.
