Provocative and powerful photographs at Contemporary Art & Design

Provocative and powerful photographs

At this spring's auction, we have the opportunity to take a closer look at several exciting works by photographers who work with themes such as identity, sexuality and violence. These are works by well-known international and Swedish photographers and artists. Their art actively highlights sexual minorities, fetishes, oppression, and exclusion.

Robert Mapplethorpes pictures of male genitals were considered highly provocative when they were introduced in the 1970s and 1980s. Philip-Lorca diCorcia's pictures of male prostitution and the dark sides of the Hollywood dream have been on display at the world's finest museums. The artists have received positive and negative reviews for their sometimes uncontroversial motifs.

Robert Mapplethorpe "Thomas, 1986", 1986

Robert Mapplethorpe is considered one of the most technically skilled photographers in the world. He is famous for his darkroom skills and ability to arrange and illuminate images. He is also famous for his sexually experimental and provocative photographs. Mapplethorpe's images of male nudes were perceived as highly provocative when presented in the 1970s and 80s. Mapplethorpe's photographic production includes such opposing motifs as flower arrangements, classic nudes, self-portraits and BDSM images. Here we see one of his recurring models, Thomas Williams, in a beautiful profile picture from 1986.

Elisabeth Ohlson "Nattvarden", 1998
######
Elisabeth Ohlson is inspired by biblical narratives. She had her big breakthrough with the exhibition Ecce Homo in 1998: a series of photographs where well-known figures from the New Testament were interpreted and staged by models from sexual minorities. Both Per Wizén's and Elisabeth Ohlson's works have been vandalized at exhibitions in Sweden. As recently as 2019, her work "Paradise", Sweden's first LGBTQ altarpiece, was forced down from St. Paul's Church in Malmö during great commotion.
