The specialist's choice – Lena Rydén shares her favourites from the upcoming sale

Specialist's choice Lena Rydén

We have spoken to Lena Rydén, Head of art, Specialist Modern Art, about this spring's upcoming auction Modern Art + Design. She took the opportunity to highlight some of her personal favourites in the sale.

What can we look forward to in this spring's Modern Art + Design auction?
– This spring's auction Modern Art & Design presents groundbreaking works from the early 20th century by Matisse students Isaac Grünewald, Sigrid Hjertén, Nils Dardel and Leander Engström as well as an exquisite collection of the very best from the men of the post-war 1947. The international department is also significant; Sweden has a tradition of talented gallery owners and collectors who have exhibited and acquired works by the most important international artists, which we can see in the auction Modern Art + Design. The market for modern art has been solid in recent seasons, and the interest seems to be holding up this season as well.

Feel free to look through our web catalogue and do not hesitate to stop by for a viewing. You can also email or call me, and we will find a time that suits you. Welcome!

Waldemar Lorentzon "Edelweiss", 1928

A year ago, we sold "Tennis Player" by Waldemar Lorentzon from 1928 for SEK 3,817,000. We have now received another work by Lorentzon from the same year, "Edelweiss". When I saw the picture that the seller initially sent me, my heart started beating! It is such an incredibly bold painting in every way, both in the composition with the high mountains' diagonals and the blood-red background. It was given as a wedding gift as early as 1929 to the current owner's grandfather and has not been on the market since then.

Piet Mondrian "Ban doors in Brabant", 1904

This painting is auction history at its best. The work was handed in at our office on Arsenalsgatan without notice. Even though the seller had a credible provenance, authorized experts must always reconcile all facts regarding significant international artists. When we received a response from RKD, the institute in The Hague that owns Mondrian's archive, they did not only verify the artwork but also announced that this was a newly discovered watercolour that had been missing. This painting is an essential work that foreshadows Mondrian's non-figurative painting.

Nils von Dardel "Nybroplan", 1918

#####
Nils von Dardel was one of Matisse's students who discovered a personal style. In addition to his Swedish artist colleagues, he also had a significant international association and network. "Nybroplan" was made in 1918, a crucial year when Dardel made several of his most famous paintings, such as "Trans-Siberian Railway" and "The Dying Dandy". He was devastated after the broken engagement with Nita Wallenberg and confused about the bourgeois ideals of his noble background. Even though "Nybroplan" was painted over 100 years ago, it still speaks to me. The painting appears very contemporary because the view is almost the same as from our premises on Arsenalsgatan 2.
