Seated on a high throne in cross-legged yogic posture of satvaparyankasana, the right leg placed over the left. His right hand is lowered, long fingers pointing downward in the earth-touching gesture, or bhumisparsha mudra. The latter symbolizes Sakyamuni's triumph over the forces of the demon Mara, who attempted to distract him from his quest for enlightenment, a ubiquitous theme in Thai Buddhist art. Height 38 cm.

Alkuperä - Provenienssi

The Collection of Ivan Traugott, Collection number 1825. Famous Swedish business man, philanthropist and art collector, the main part of his collection is today at the National Museum, Stockholm. Member of the China Club, investor in the Karlbeck Syndicate.
