Nick Ross (b. 1986)
BFA, Grays School of Art in Aberdeen.
MFA, Konstfack, College of Arts, Crafts and Design.
Ross founded his own studio in 2014, starting a career that has led him to receive many international prizes and honours, including: Formex Nova (2016), Design Parade 11 (honourable mention in 2016), Architectural Digest’s Emerging Designer Award (2014), Muuto Talent Award (2014) and the Young Swedish Design Award (in 2011 and 2013).
His research focuses on the complex repertoire of ancient history where he finds the factors with which to interpret the relationship between the user and contemporary design. Using storytelling as a pretext and applying an always critical approach, Ross is interested in investigating facts and happenings that have determined specific cultural balances and ideals. Every project comes from the desire to create ideal or real bridges between the present society and that of the past.
In the work with "Little white lies" he chose to look at our connection with the marble sculptures of the ancient Romans and Greeks. These to us are symbols of artistic and cultural good taste.
Recent research has revealed that the white sculptures were initially painted and in recent years we have been able to re-create some of those vibrant works of art as they originally might have looked. Ross marble object is a comment on the ideas of true representations that we still can not accept.
