Gerda Sprinchorn

As a female sculptor around the turn of the century 18/1900, the artist, unlike the male sculptors who performed the large public monumental works, was often referred to creating smaller sculptures, statuettes and objects for decoration.
That was also the case for Gerda Sprinchorn, with the exception of one job. Her sculpture depicting a young Carl von Linné had been created for the 200th anniversary in 1907, but at the age of 77, 1948, she saw her full-size sculpture inaugurated at the church in Stenbrohult, on the old rectory site where Linnaeus was born and raised.
This became the only public work by her apart from the tombstones of three fellow artists.
A press release from 1907 describes the sculpture: “It depicts the 'flower king' at around the age of 17, completely preoccupied with looking at a flower. On the plinth you can see the year 1707-1907, as well as some linen. ”
The stayette was exhibited in Hallins konsthandel and Nordiska bokhandeln, with several exhibitions during the early 20th century and represented Sprinchorn in the USA in the 1930s.
The sculpture usually appears in plaster and it is also the version that is shown at the Nationalmuseum's current exhibition on female sculptors.
