Den från Bremen bördige Precht fick sin utbildning som bildhuggare i brodern Christians verkstad i Hamburg. År 1674 anländer han i Stockholm där han tar anställning som bildhuggare där han bland annat arbetade med inredningarna på Drottningholm. Prechts yrkesskicklighet var uppenbar, och 1682 blev han utnämnd till hovbildhuggare för sina förtjänster. Åren 1687-88 spenderade han på studieresa till Paris och Rom med Nicodemus Tessin d.y., och tillsammans kom de sedan att introducera den så kallade "guldbarocken" i Sverige. Prechts senare produktion visar en stark influens av den franske arkitekten Daniel Marot, vars modeller, ornament, och mönster är återkommande, och vars mönsterböcker han säkerligen studerade.
