Muut tiedot

Rikard Lindström (1882-1943) was a Swedish artist and writer, best known for his depictions of the archipelago. The sea was a recurring motif in his art - a theme he followed faithfully throughout his life, and which probably also led him to Skagen. The small fishing village on the northern tip of Jutland had been transformed at the turn of the century into a vibrant artistic centre, known for its distinctive light and lively creative environment.

Lindström began his studies at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen in 1901, and between 1902 and 1905 he trained under the Danish artist Kristian Zahrtmann. By then, Zahrtmann had taken over the teaching at the Artists' Study Schools from prominent figures such as Laurits Tuxen and P.S. Krøyer - two influential members of the Skagen Colony. Since Krøyer taught at the school until 1902, it is possible that Lindström met him there.

It is not entirely clear when Lindström first visited Skagen, but it may have been at Krøyer's invitation or it may have been a natural step for an artist deeply fascinated by the sea and its changing expressions. Skagen's landscape, light and collective artistic life offered an ideal place for Lindström to deepen his marine painting.

Lindström made his debut in 1907 at the Konstnärsförbundets exhibition in Stockholm and went on to exhibit both in Sweden and internationally. In addition to painting, Lindström was also active as a writer. In his novels, he often depicted the moods and environments of Stockholm with the same sensitivity and atmospheric precision as in his paintings.
