The dates refer to the coup d'état on 19 August and the adoption of the constitution on 21 August 1772. Gustav III chose to distribute jewels and rings to various individuals who had supported him during the revolution. Swedes who wanted to show their approval of the revolution could tie a white handkerchief around their left upper arm. The design of the auction's brooch closely relates to the rings that were given.
