Ålsgårde is a former fishing village that is now a residential community and tourist destination, located northwest of Helsingør in Denmark. In the early 1900s, Ålsgårde became a popular seaside resort for the people of Copenhagen. The picturesque environment also attracted writers and artists to Ålsgårde.
Rytterhuset (Nordre Strandvej 230) was built in 1889 as a summer residence for the artist Frants Henningsen, designed in the National Romantic style by Martin Nyrop. The property, which includes a pier with a bathing house as well as a couple of outbuildings, is today protected and listed in the Danish register of preserved buildings and places.
The German author Thomas Mann spent a holiday at a seaside hotel in Ålsgårde in September 1899, and had the main character in his story Tonio Kröger do the same. The Danish artist Peder Mönsted painted several motifs from Ålsgårde.
