Muut tiedot

The Danish artist Carl Holsøe is known for his intimate interior paintings of bourgeois environments in muted tones of grey, white, and soft shades of brown. In this work, the artist has depicted a breakfast room characterised by understated Scandinavian aesthetics – a balance between the everyday and the stylish. The room, with its carefully selected furniture and the light playing over the objects, creates a scene that exudes both calm and harmony. The meditative atmosphere is enhanced by the light falling in through an invisible window. Despite the absence of human presence, the viewer feels like a silent observer of a private moment.

Holsøe, who trained at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and later with Peder Severin Krøyer, shared his artistic vision with his friends Vilhelm Hammershøi and Peter Ilsted. Together, they immersed themselves in the intricate play of light and created a new aesthetic in Scandinavian art, inspired by Dutch masters such as Vermeer and de Hooch. Unlike Hammershøi, Holsøe's works lack symbolic undertones and instead focus on the narrative beauty of the stillness of the moment.
