In his artistic practice, Zi Peng primarily works with oil painting on canvas. His works are characterized by combinations of representational motifs and material- or decorative-oriented elements, with jade recurring as a central visual and thematic component.
His motifs are drawn both from contemporary visual culture and from more traditional symbolic systems. His painting is often marked by a high level of detail and a treatment of surfaces that emphasizes materiality, light, and apparent three-dimensionality. Zi Peng’s work addresses questions concerning the construction of images, perception, and the relationship between representation and materiality.
