The table "Ornament" was the conceptual piece in Klara Knutsson's graduation project at Malmsten LiU in 2021. In her work, Knutsson explored how she, as a furniture maker, could incorporate decorative elements into her design. The table is a replica of IKEA's LACK table with a decorative inlay on the tabletop. To clarify the inlay's ornamental purpose, she chose to place the motif on a piece of furniture that represented the stripped-down ideal. Knutsson aimed to create a motif that referenced classical decorative patterns by using botanical themes. The hands represent the craftsman's presence in the decorative space.
"Ornament" was one of the winners of Ung Svensk Form (Young Swedish Design) 2022. The jury's motivation stated: Ornament is the opposite of the familiar mass-produced table from which this piece takes its form. While the original uses veneer to conceal cheap materials, this time-consuming craftsmanship disguises itself as an inexpensive bestseller. An entertaining contribution to the conversation around throwaway culture and a reminder of the craft knowledge that risks disappearing.
