Muut tiedot

The textile artist Margareta Sundbom-Eichenholz, born in 1928, developed an early interest in art and craftsmanship and studied at Konstfack, Stockholm, around 1950. Her education provided a strong foundation in both traditional techniques and a more experimental approach to textile art, which shaped her artistic practice throughout her career.

The two carpets currently presented at auction can be understood in light of this background, but above all through her strong connection to nature. Sundbom-Eichenholz drew much of her inspiration from the forests of Hälsingland, which served as a recurring source of motifs and atmosphere in her work. The carpets can be seen as interpretations of these landscapes—not as literal representations, but as artistic translations of the rhythms, colours, and structures of the forest.

Her use of colour and composition is particularly striking, creating a sense of depth and movement reminiscent of a dense woodland. Organic forms and shifting tones evoke tree trunks, filtered light, and the textures of the forest floor. In this way, the carpets become more than decorative objects; they convey a sense of place and lived experience.

Her upbringing in northern Uppland, and later life in Gästrikland, where she lived in close contact with both natural and industrial environments, further informed her visual language. These influences can also be traced in the carpets, where a balance between organic and structured elements is evident.

Sundbom-Eichenholz was also deeply engaged in the Swedish handicraft movement, both nationally and internationally. Her work in the United States, where she toured and exhibited extensively, reflects her ambition to preserve and renew textile traditions. This ambition is visible in the carpets, where traditional craftsmanship is combined with a distinctly personal artistic expression.

Her artistic production came to an end as early as 1957, making her body of work part of a relatively short but intense creative period. This lends particular significance to the carpets, which can be seen as concentrated expressions of her artistic vision during this formative phase.

Taken together, the two carpets represent a synthesis of her artistic ideals: nature-inspired imagery, technical skill, and a commitment to renewing textile art.
