In sculpture, Lars-Gunnar Nordström's production can be divided into two periods. The works from the early period in the 1950s consisted of welded pieces of scrap iron. The geometric form motifs and rhythmic compositions familiar from his paintings are echoed in the sculptures.
However, the works were not colourful, as Nordström left the surface either untreated or, more rarely, painted them in a single colour. The industrial method of production was a conscious distancing from the academic conventions of sculpture. During the later period, starting from the 1970s, the material of the sculptures changed to polished steel plates. At the same time, the works grew in size and the formal language became more austere – repetition became a stronger element in the compositions. As material for sketches, shop receipts were just as useful as scraps of paper. Studies of form and movement in the guise of abstract origami found their final shape in metal.
