Estève initially painted realistically but was influenced by Léger, Matisse, and Bonnard in the late 1920s. He worked, among other things, as an assistant to Robert Delaunay during the 1930s and gradually became more abstract during the 1940s, eventually fully transitioning to lyrical abstraction alongside artists such as Bazaine and Riopelle. Estève participated in the Venice Biennale in 1954, the same year this particular work was created.
