The French painter Francois-Auguste Biard accompanied Arctic research expeditions during the late 1830s. He visited Spitsbergen and travelled through Norway and Sweden, where he made sketches and some subjects were later transformed into larger compositions. The artwork "Le Pasteur Læstadius instruisant les Lapons" for example, was exhibited at the Salon in Paris in 1841.
