The Trinity Church in Arvika, designed by architects Ivar Tengbom and Ernst Torulf, was built between 1909 and 1911, inspired by the national romanticism and Art Nouveau. It became a project that engaged many artists from the Rackstad colony. Many of the church's furnishings were designed by Tengbom, and the altarpiece was executed by Björn Ahlgrensson. The sketch has most probably been in Tengbom's possession, according to the inscription on the reverse. The present sketch for the altarpiece shows the artist's path to the final composition depicting Jesus on the way to Golgotha.
