A blanc de chine figure of Guandi, Qing dynasty, 18th century.

Depicted seated clad in loose fitting robes where you can se the armour beneath, the face with frowning brows and the mouth surrounded by holes for a moustache and beard. The trone is covered in a tiger hide that is seen below his feet. Height 22 cm. Height with wooden stand 26 cm.

Polished glaze to the shoulders.

Alkuperä - Provenienssi

The Collection of G. B. Sabelström (1888–1944). Sabelström worked for the Indian Brewery/United Breweries and lived in Shanghai from the 1920s up until his death in 1944. He was an important art collector and a member of The Royal Asiatic Society in Shanghai that was closely related to the Shanghai Art Museum. As he passed without heirs, he left his collection to Erik Dahl (1896-1979), a Swedish agent for the Swedish paper industry that came to be stationed in Shanghai and Kobe from the 1920s and onwards. Erik Dahl returned to Sweden by the Trans-Siberian Railway and the collection was sent by sea to Sweden after World War II. Thence by descent.

Guandi (162-220), also known as Guan Yu, originally was a heroic general of the Period of Three Kingdoms. Over the centuries, Guan Yu's achievements have been largely elaborated. Guan Yu has become the incarnation of the strength to impel, inspire and motivate, interpreted as the God of Wealth, the God of War and the Protector God of Temples. See P.
