In 1961–62, Nygårds worked as an assistant to the American photographer Bert Stern. One day in June 1962, they were in Los Angeles to photograph Marilyn Monroe on assignment for Vogue magazine. The commission involved a four-day photo shoot at the Bel-Air Hotel.
At the time, Monroe was filming "Something’s Got to Give" in which she portrayed a Swedish domestic worker, and she was interested in having Nygårds help her practise her Swedish pronunciation. As the two got along well, Monroe made an exception and allowed him to take a nude photograph of her. She chose the setting and the moment; Nygårds was left to capture it, resulting in a spontaneous image.
According to Gary Cole, picture editor at Playboy, this was the last photograph of Monroe taken by a professional photographer.
