Introduced in 1992, the Patek Philippe reference 5040 represents a less conventional side of the manufacture’s design language. With its tonneau-shaped case, often described as Tortue after its turtle-like silhouette, the model offers a clear alternative to the classically round reference 3940. Despite its distinctive shape, it houses one of the period’s most sophisticated complications in a relatively discreet format.
Inside is caliber 240/114, an ultra-thin self-winding movement equipped with a perpetual calendar, moon phases and a 24-hour indication. Its eccentrically positioned 22-karat gold micro-rotor is integrated into the movement’s architecture, contributing to an overall case thickness of less than 9 mm. The combination of automatic winding and a perpetual calendar in such a slim construction is one of the model’s defining technical features.
The dial is equally considered. Its recessed calendar registers, separate moon-phase display and applied Breguet numerals create an aesthetic that combines classical references with a more distinctive case design. The model was produced in several precious metals until 2007, but never achieved the same widespread recognition as the round reference 3940. In retrospect, this is part of its appeal: the reference 5040 offers the same fundamental complication in a more unusual and unexpected interpretation of Patek Philippe’s design language.
Total production is commonly estimated at approximately 3,350 examples, of which around 500 are thought to have been made in white gold. These figures are estimates rather than officially confirmed production totals. The reference 5040 is an intriguing example of how Patek Philippe combined traditional watchmaking with a more experimental approach to case shape and proportions during the 1990s and 2000s.
