Few wristwatches have achieved the iconic status of the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona. Introduced in 1963, the model was originally developed as a professional timing instrument for motorsport. Equipped with a chronograph and tachymeter scale, allowing drivers to calculate average speeds, the Daytona became closely associated with American motor racing and the legendary Daytona International Speedway in Florida. What began as a functional tool for racing drivers has since evolved into one of the most celebrated and sought-after collector's watches in the world.
Introduced in the early 1970s, reference 6265 belongs to the final generation of manually wound Daytona chronographs. Together with its sister reference 6263, it represents an important chapter in the model's evolution, featuring screw-down chronograph pushers, improved water resistance and the manually wound calibre 727, based on the Valjoux 72. While reference 6263 is distinguished by its black acrylic bezel, the 6265 features an engraved stainless steel tachymeter bezel, recalling the design of the earliest Daytona models. The reference remained in production until the late 1980s, when Rolex introduced the automatic Daytona, bringing the era of manually wound Cosmographs to an end.
The present example, dating to circa 1978, features the highly desirable black dial with three contrasting subsidiary registers and the distinctive red DAYTONA signature positioned above the register at 6 o'clock. It is this prominent red lettering that gave rise to the collector's nickname “Big Red”. The combination of the black dial, contrasting registers and vivid red signature has become one of the most recognisable and admired designs within the vintage Daytona family.
The watch has remained within the same family since the 1980s and was subsequently inherited by its present owner. Accompanying the watch is a Rolex guarantee document dated 12 March 1980.
