Muut tiedot

The present chair displays a certain affinity with the furniture designed for Stockholm City Hall by, among others, Ragnar Östberg, Ernst Spolén and Carl Malmsten.

In 1912, architect Östberg initially entrusted the interior design commission to architect Elis Benckert, who possessed expertise in carpentry. Benckert was tasked with developing proposals for the interior of the City Hall and became the head of the furniture department that was established at the time. Unfortunately, no traces of Benckert’s work can be found. Benckert died by suicide at the end of 1912, and the interior design commission was subsequently passed on to Ernst Spolén.

Compare, for example, Malmsten’s chairman’s chair for Rådsalen, Spolén’s chairman’s chair in the original interior of Gyllene salen, and Östberg and Spolén’s interior for Salen Tre Kronor. Spolén devoted considerable time to studying historical precedents and travelled, among other places, to Denmark to study Rosenborg Castle. In Sweden, he studied Stockholms slott, Drottningholms slott, Kina slott and Gripsholms slott, as well as furniture in Swedish museum collections.
