Muut tiedot

This carpet tells several stories. First exhibited at the Stockholm Exhibition of 1930, it later became part of the home of Astri and Evert Taube, placing it within the circle of one of Sweden's most celebrated artistic couples.

Its provenance also leads to the friendship between Ingegerd Torhamn and Astri Bergman Taube. Although they worked in different artistic mediums, they shared a deep affinity with nature, the sea and the Swedish archipelago, themes that recur throughout both of their oeuvres. Seen in this light, the rug becomes more than an early work by Ingegerd Torhamn. It also serves as a tangible link between two distinguished female artists and their respective creative worlds.

When the rug was shown at the Stockholm Exhibition in 1930, it formed part of an event that would help shape the future of Swedish art, architecture and design. The exhibition brought together many of the leading designers and craft practitioners of the period, while textile art was afforded an important role through figures such as Märta Måås-Fjetterström, Elsa Gullberg and Barbro Nilsson. The exhibition marked a breakthrough in the recognition of textiles as a modern and independent artistic medium, and Torhamn's participation places her work firmly within this pivotal moment in Swedish design history.

Textile works represent a relatively small yet significant part of Torhamn's artistic production. Alongside the monumental commissions for which she is best known, these works reveal a more intimate scale, while retaining the same strong sense of form, rhythm and narrative. The fact that this rug once belonged to the home of Astri and Evert Taube lends it an additional dimension. It stands not only as a testament to Torhamn's artistry, but also as a reminder of the personal relationships and creative networks that shaped Swedish cultural life during the first half of the twentieth century.
