"Från Gbgs hamn"
Monogrammed RS and dated 1940. Pastel on paper, image 26 x 35 cm.
Ragnar Sandberg’s atmospheric painting captures the harbour of Gothenburg with a light touch and a fine sense of colour. The strong blue balcony railing frames the view and creates a contrast with the soft, hazy light over the water. The warm red tones of the boats add energy and movement to the composition, making the painting a lively yet balanced portrayal of a classic West Coast scene.
The Port of Gothenburg, especially the area around Lilla Bommen, was one of Ragnar Sandberg’s favourite subjects. He painted both the wide harbour views and the individual workers.
This work most likely shows the view from an apartment balcony or studio on the southern bank of the Göta Älv, or from the nearby hills around Stigberget and Masthugget.
The wide stretch of water is the Göta Älv, where cranes and archipelago boats move through the harbour. Hisingen can be seen in the background, on the other side of the river. The pointed vertical shape in the centre of the background may be a simplified image of a large harbour crane or a landmark on the Hisingen side, perhaps near Lundby or Sannegårdshamnen.
The hazy grey-blue colours are typical of how Ragnar Sandberg often painted the light along Sweden’s West Coast and the harbour’s strong industrial character during the 1930s and 1940s. His larger oil paintings of the harbour often show wide views filled with cranes, steamships and people walking along the quays. This work is more intimate. Instead of showing the busy harbour from close up, Sandberg views it from a distance, giving the painting a more poetic and peaceful mood.
