Walk with Horse by the Kåseberga Hills
Signed with monogram TVH. Oil on panel 20 x 25 cm.
Probably executed between 1937 and 1945, during the years when Tora Vega Holmström maintained her studio at Kåseberga Backar.
The present painting is Tora Vega Holmström’s vibrant tribute to the cultural landscape of southern Sweden. It radiates a remarkable sense of movement, with the hills seeming almost to dance in rhythm with the galloping horse at its centre.
By contrasting sunlit ochre-yellow and red hilltops with cool passages of bright green and violet, she creates a magical interplay of light. The vigorous brushwork further enhances the painting with a compelling texture that makes it both modern and captivating.
For Tora Vega Holmström, Kåseberga in Österlen was far more than a picturesque landscape motif. It was a way of life and an artistic sanctuary. From 1937 onwards, she rented a simple seaside hut that served as her summer studio.
Holmström described herself as being “hopelessly in love with the landscape.” She referred to the meeting of the dramatic cliffs, the rolling hills, and the open sea as “the horizontal music.”
It was here, at Kåseberga Backar, that her late landscape painting evolved into a monumental, highly stylised mode, with forms that approached Cubism.
The landscape allowed her to experiment freely with her powerful, expressive use of colour and her characteristic palette of purple, violet, and yellow-green. It was a place of profound inspiration that came to define a significant part of her celebrated late oeuvre.
