The title of the motif alludes to the Russian iconographic subject “Neopalimaya Kupina” (The Burning Bush that is not consumed). It is often a complex and deeply symbolic Orthodox icon depicting the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child, surrounded by angels, the symbols of the Evangelists, and scenes from the Old Testament, such as Moses and the Burning Bush. In Russian popular belief and tradition, the icon has been regarded since the late 16th century as a powerful protection against fires. It became customary to hang the icon in homes or bring it out during fires to pray for the flames to be extinguished. Today, it is also regarded as a patron saint of, among others, firefighters.
